We stopped at an abandoned water park on the California-Nevada border. On the remains of columns up the hill we saw swastikas. A man on a motorcycle came in from below. Later, as we arrived at Zion, a girl took my hand while I was walking. She did it with such confidence that I was at first not surprised -- somehow it seemed natural -- and only after a few seconds did I think to wonder what was happening. She looked at me with her blond face and pink aura and then looked at my wool cutoff glove with floppy finger pocket, and I curiously looked to her parent. She told me she collects people, that she is always collecting people. The aspens were yellow and the rock wall jutting up behind them was burning with light. A cool river called the Virgin meandered slowly past. After a while the girl let go. These days have often found someone lacking the ingredients necessary to complete a transaction. The cafe ran out of everything, and a man came out to apologize with his hands in front of him, saying we don't have any food at all, folks, except cheese sandwiches. This morning a traveller said to the hotel employee that the complimentary drink dispenser was out of three types of juice, was just pouring water, and was also lacking coffee. The employee came over and opened a drawer where I saw the torn-off cover of a phone book and a toothbrush. Replacing the coffee insert the tourist educated him that he needed to twist the tip. Later, on the bus, a man wearing camo started playing metal on his phone. Then, in the rain, we saw a 1,000 year-old petroglyph made by Ancestral Puebloans.
